Watch the Cast of ‘The McCarthys’ Take a ‘Boston Accent Test’
Will you be tuning into the upcoming Boston-based sitcom?
The McCarthys premieres on CBS on Thursday, October 30, and it’s the fall sitcom that serves as Boston’s most current foray into the TV spotlight. So naturally, Boston accents will abound.
The show, which stars Tyler Ritter, Laurie Metcalf, and hometown boy Joey McIntyre, follows a sports-obsessed Southie family trying to accept their gay, non-sports-obsessed son, Ronny’s (Ritter), decision to move from Boston to Providence, RI. It’s really a toss-up as to how the show’s going to pan out, but I’m not predicting too many seasons on deck for this one – Boston stereotypes only play for so long, after all. But, maybe Ronny’s sharp differences from the rest of his family will actually turn out to be funny? (In the Pilot sneak peek, he walks in on the rest of his family watching the game, and asks “so, who’s winning the sports today?”)
As the McCarthy family are Southie through and through, Boston accents will run thick, but they won’t all be natural. And in a promo for the show, the cast tries to prove their own Boston accents, some real, some fabricated. Watch the test below and see if you can spot any real Bostonians (besides Joey McIntyre). Spoiler: Things aren’t sounding great for lead actor Ritter.
Spot any true Bostonians? I think the most subtle proof lies in the sawr in place of saw. At least McIntyre seems tired of this Boston accent exploitation, as well.
While The McCarthys seems like it could pass for cute and funny at times, I just don’t see such a stereotypically “Boston” show faring well nationally. Agree? Disagree? The McCarthys premieres at 9:30 p.m. on October 30 – I guess we’ll have to find out.
